Our Channel Surfing TV picks for this week include a criminal drama, an all-ages comic adaptation, and a dark comedy. David Simon has yet another HBO series delving into police corruption in his native Baltimore in We Own This City. Characters inspired by Stan Sakai’s creator owned comic get animated in Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles. Then, explore if we can really escape toxic relationships in the new season of Made for Love.

A Moral Collapse

Several of David Simon’s television projects have looked at the societal impact of crime and the war on drugs has had by using his hometown of Charm City as the backdrop. Whether it was Homicide: Life on the Street, The Corner, or The Wire, his writing always captured an authenticity and realism of its subjects.

His latest series is We Own This City, which is based on the nonfiction book with the same name written by Justin Fenton. The six-episode mini-series covers the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force and their crooked ways. John Bernthal, Josh Charles, Jamie Hector, and more star.

The first episode of We Own This City airs tonight on HBO.

Following in Great Footsteps

Usagi Yojimbo has been entertaining comic fans for over 30 years. In that time, Miyamoto Usagi has appeared on television in several Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoons throughout the years. Now the rabbit ronin is ready to star in his own animated series…sort of.

In Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, the story takes place a thousand years in the future and centers around Yuichi Usagi, a descendant of Miyamoto. It follows his adventures into becoming a samurai and he is joined by other descendants of the comic characters including Kitsune, Gen, and Kitsu. Together, they protect their city of Neo Edo from Yokai monsters, ninjas, and aliens.

Binge the entire first season of Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles beginning Thursday, April 28, on Netflix.

No Escapin’ This

Hazel Green thought she left her old life behind by escaping the Hub compound and reconciling with her estranged father. However, her new found freedom was short lived and she now finds herself back in the clutches of her toxic husband. A fitting description for someone who implanted a monitoring device in her brain to track and watch her along with obtaining her “emotional data.”

In the second season of Made for Love, Hazel reluctantly returns to Byron in order for her dad to receive state of the art treatment for his cancer. She must keep up appearances while her spouse is investigated by the FBI but she is placed in an uncomfortable spot when an undercover agent in the Hub approaches her to turn on Byron. Will she jump at the opportunity or stay the course for her father?

The new season of Made for Love begins Thursday, April 28, on HBO Max.
