The Walking Dead: Melissa McBride leaves upcoming Daryl/Carol spinoff series

Guess it’s just the Daryl spinoff now.

On Wednesday, Michael Ausiello of TVLine exclusively revealed that Melissa McBride will no longer be part of the planned Daryl/Carol Walking Dead spinoff series. Ausiello’s report was confirmed a short time later by Variety.

The Walking Dead has a bunch of spinoffs planned after the main series ends later this year, including one that will feature Negan and Maggie hanging out together in New York. As interesting (and bizarre) as that sounds, the Daryl/Carol spinoff was largely seen as a continuation of the Walking Dead franchise’s flagship show. In addition to both characters being incredibly popular, they’re also the only ones remaining from the first season.

In a statement to TVLine, AMC explained that Melissa McBride’s exit was due to her being unable to relocate to Europe for filming. The Walking Dead filming in Europe opens up a whole host of new questions, but let’s stick with the official statement for now:

“Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human, and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe. Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future.”

It can be safely assumed that the series will now focus on Daryl. There’s also a chance that Carol’s previous plot armor may not protect her during The Walking Dead‘s final stretch of episodes–especially if her death makes Daryl angry enough to go overseas.
