Captain Marvel #38 is another fun, lighthearted chapter in Kelly Thompson’s excellent run with the character. Thompson’s writing is witty and every page is infused with a light bit of humor, especially where Binary is involved. The final pages set up an interesting plot where Carol is concerned, making the wait for issue #39 feel all the longer.
Binary’s writing and role in the story still feels a little repetitive to how Lauri-Ell was introduced, following the whole “otherworldly person is a good samaritan but doesn’t always ‘get’ human culture” trope. However, Binary, Hazmat, and Spider-Woman are a team that’s an absolute joy to read, creating humorous interactions that make you smile as you read.

Thompson begins to focus in on more fascinating plots too, like Binary’s identity crisis that’s boiling at the surface. The “news” themed panels were also a great way to showcase how the public views Binary’s emergence as a new hero.
It doesn’t seem like there’s much going on on the surface in Captain Marvel #38, but Thompson uses this issue to have a good time and weave together deeper plots for both Binary and Carol. The art in this issue is perfect, with Figeri and Lopez making every page expressive and eye-catching for the reader to enjoy.
