On Tuesday, director Todd Phillips revealed on his Instagram that there will be a sequel to his 2019 Joker film. The post also revealed a working title (Joker: Folie à deux) followed by a shot of Joaquin Phoenix reading the script. Phillips and Scott Silver will be writing the screenplay again.
Warner Bros. initially stated/insisted that Joker would be a standalone film. After becoming a box office hit and winning a host of awards, however, that was never going to stick.
So what will the movie be about?
Considering that the original Joker takes place out of any of the other DC/Batman media franchises, the sequel could go in a number of different directions. Regarding the title, “folie à deux” is defined as “an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family.” This might cause a lot of folks to guess that Harley Quinn will be showing up, but it just as easily could be a grown-up Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Whatever the case, its production and development are sure to generate plenty of buzz during the rest of the year.
