Cannabis Buyers Club is an episodic documentary series that recently screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. It also looks at two movements in the United States. It explores the movement to legalize weed along with LGBTQ rights activist Dennis Peron. It follows how Perron started as a solder in Vietnam and came to help AIDS patients even as their country seemed to want to ignore them.
The documentary captures the essence of who Peron was. (He died in 2018 and gave some of his last interviews to filmmakers Kip Andersen and Chris O’Connell.) These moments are touching and help solidify the protagonist. This includes going into the death of his partner due to AIDS and how he founded the Cannabis Buyers Club. This gave people the opportunity to purchase the medicine they needed.
It is also a story of San Francisco. It is as much of a character as Peron himself. As cannabis becomes more acceptable, it is an interesting look back at a time when things were so much different. Cannabis Buyers Club does not try to push an agenda or change anyone’s mind. It is a look at person who wanted to make a difference and succeeded in doing so.
