[Fantasia ’22] Fantasia Film Festival is cutting edge and still for every movie fan

Something for everyone.

The Fantasia Film Festival has always been one of the most interesting film fests of the year. The genre festival has been the home of innovative films like Train to Busan to commercial successes like The Last Exorcism. It is not limited to just horror, either. Comedy, documentaries, and anime have all be shown. This year’s lineup includes a number of films that will appeal to all kinds of film fans.

A Life on the Farm

It is not often that you get to describe a movie as “a different type of found footage.” This documentary is about a mysterious VHS tape found by director Oscar Harding sixteen years ago. His grandfather had passed away and when Oscar tried to watch the tape, his parents immediately made him shut it off. Over a decade later, he finally had a chance to watch it. What he found was a shocking self-documentary that included cat funerals, skeleton tractor races, and explicit lessons in cow birthing.

Coupez!

One Cut of the Dead is one of the best zombie movies of the past decade. Seeing it remade within five years of its initial release is more than a little worrisome. Especially since some of the things that made it stand out initially are almost impossible to replicate. It was made for around $25,000 with a bunch of unknown actors from a drama school in Tokyo, for example. But with Academy Award winning director Michael Hazanavicius, this remake may be able to pull it off. At worse, it will be interesting to see how well the story translates with bigger production values.

Dark Glasses

Dario Argento secured his place in genre history long ago. His latest film is a return to the type of movies that first found him fame: giallo. Dark Glasses is about a high end sex worker named Diana who is blinded after a car crash. The person responsible soon begins stalking Diana in order to finish what he started. The film promises to be more stripped down, but just as violent as anything Argento has ever done.

Incredible but True

Quentin Dupieux is one of the most creative and innovative filmmakers today. His resume includes a series of movies that should not work, but end up being some of the most memorable ones a person will ever see. His latest work to come to Fantasia is about a couple who are looking to change things up in their relationship. They end up buying a house in the suburbs with an unusual feature. If it is anything like Dupieux’s previous works, tt is sure to be wildly imaginative while still being relatable.

Lynch/Oz

Documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe specializes in taking viewers deep inside their favorite movies. For his latest project, he lifts the velvet curtain on iconic filmmaker David Lynch’s obsession with The Wizard Of Oz —a film that Lynch/Oz argues is the foundational text for all of Lynch’s work. Red shoes, hollow winds, gossamer bubbles, naïve young women in terrible trouble—all these elements and more are present in Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks, as  Lynch/Oz illustrates with striking, persuasive split-screen visuals. Interviews highlight how the things love affect our creativity.

The Fantasia International Film Festival takes place July 14 through August 3. The full lineup can be found HERE
