The entire third season of Solar Opposites was released recently for fans to binge. The adult animated sitcom follows a family of aliens stranded on Earth. Their main directive is to raise and nurture an infant-like being known as the Pupa in order for it to terraform the planet and recreate their home world. However, the longer they stay, the more enamored they become with the culture and its people and slowly assimilate into acting human.
Every day in the life of the Solar Opposites, Korvo (Justin Roiland), Terry (Thomas Middleditch), Yumulack (Sean Giambrone), and Jesse (Mary Mack) get into crazy and funny science fiction adventures. We’ve already spoken with Executive Producers Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel about the new season. We also had the chance to talk with the voice talent including Middleditch, Giambrone, and Mack. They had much to share about their characters.
In our review of the most recent season, we mentioned the growth the characters experience. The actors went into more detail of how their on-screen versions have evolved. For example, Terry is really exploring his prospects. Terry is “getting a lot more romantic and with all kinds of things. Deep diving into everything to be human and pop culture and deep diving into other people,” Middleditch said.
On the other hand, the replicants can relate to people better. Mack believes Jesse “expands in her empathy and also she advances her leadership skills as well. She’s a little more assertive. Possibly asserting influence over Yumulack where it used to be Yumulack was asserting influence over her.” Giambrone agrees that his “sister” has influenced his character. Yumulack is ” more empathetic through time spent with Jesse, but he’s still kind of angry. He’s still kind of antsy…but growing in his own way.”
They also teased a few things from the new episodes of Solar Opposites. Middleditch cryptically revealed “Pupa has certain powers that change things and change how we look at it and what we’re going to do about it.” The actor also discussed what he’s most excited for fans to see. “Terry and Korvo get really into trains. I’ve been watching people online who are big into trains and those two things intersected was a real special moment for me.” For Giambrone, it is the episode entitled “99 Ships” because it delves more into the Shlorpian backstory and he found it pretty interesting.
The trio also speculated on where they would want their characters to go next. Middleditch wanted more of the same with Terry going on a “bender and lose his mind and have Korvo have to rescue him.” Mack would like Jesse to continue to grow as a leader and run for either president of the student council or a position on the school board. Similarly, Giambrone would want something grounded like Yumulack getting a job. Regardless of how mundane the activity, I’m sure the show’s writers will find a way to make it both outrageous and hilarious.
