Paramount releases first trailer for ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’

Even with low expectations, the trailer for Paramount’s latest attempt at a D&D movie looks surprisingly good.

On Thursday, San Diego Comic-Con had its first major studio panel in three years courtesy of Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. While this wasn’t one of the panels we were lucky enough to attend, Mia Galuppo and Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter have a great rundown of what took place — including some scene-stealing commentary courtesy of Hugh Grant, who plays the film’s villain.

Grant was joined by co-stars Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, Chris Pine, and Michelle Rodriguez along with directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (the team behind 2017’s brilliant comedy Game Night). After some behind-the-scenes looks and the cast discussing their personal experiences with the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG, Hall H was treated to a trailer that was also released online.

I know a lot of us had low expectations going in, but I think we can all agree that this looks to be significantly better than the 2000 Dungeons & Dragons movie. That’s not saying much, but this film legitimately looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Based solely on the trailer, the movie appears to capture much of the banter and fun that makes the classic tabletop game so enjoyable, but without being hokey. The comedic tone is buttressed by epic battles, fantastic creatures, and a great, well-balanced party of characters.

There’s also an owlbear, which is all types of awesome to see wreaking havoc in live-action.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is scheduled to hit theaters on March 23, 2023.
