SDCC ’22: ‘The Walking Dead’ gets new trailers and announces two major characters’ return

You can probably guess who’s returning, but the way they’ll be coming back is a bit unexpected.

On Friday, AMC’s held the final San Diego Comic-Con panel for The Walking Dead. While other shows will continue the story (which we’ll discuss in a bit), this is the last time the flagship series will be featured in Hall H.

AMC also released the trailer for Season 11’s final eight episodes, which will debut on October 2. After a brief montage of some of the series’ biggest moments, we’re thrown right into the mix of what appears to be the most brutal war we’ll ever see our survivors take part in. We also learn that the zombies are starting to figure out how to open doors and climb walls, which could definitely create some issues.

Watch the trailer below.

As cool as all that was, what everyone really wanted to know (myself included) was if Rick Grimes and Michonne Hawthorne were going to show up again.

When it looked like that question would go unanswered, multiple reports exploded across social media of actors Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira making a surprise appearance on stage. After the pair bathed in rapturous applause, it was announced that the long-awaited Rick Grimes movie(s) was not happening anymore. Instead, Rick and Michonne’s story will be completed via a 6-issue miniseries in 2023.

I know, I know…another spinoff. But at least we won’t have to buy a movie ticket to learn the fate of two of The Walking Dead‘s main characters.

Speaking of spinoffs, we also got a new trailer for the Tales of The Walking Dead anthology series, which debuts on August 14. Watch that below.

I’m still not very excited about this one, but I’m definitely more interested after that trailer — especially for the story exploring Alpha before her time with the Whisperers. I’m also glad about the chance for more people to see what a good actor Danny Ramirez is (since not nearly enough folks witnessed his brilliant work in No Exit).

The Walking Dead series may be ending, but The Walking Dead franchise continues to shuffle forward.
