Move over Avengers and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Top Gun: Maverick, the new blockbuster hit sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun, has just broken into the list of the top 10 highest grossing films of all time.
The new Tom Cruise film takes the number nine spot. The earnings have been extremely impressive with a domestic haul of over $625 million dollars and an international haul of $1.25 billion.
This long-awaited followup is also the highest grossing film that Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise has ever been in. And that is saying something given Cruise’s status and filmography.
The sequel has really defeated sequel-itis when it comes to quality and reception. A whole lot of second chapters to come out of Hollywood haven’t exactly matched the quality of their predecessors, but according to both critics and audiences, Top Gun: Maverick has.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Maverick has a critical rating of 97% and an audience rating of 99%. It also has a rating of 8.6/10 on IMDb and a rating of 78/100 on Metacritic.
The film is still playing in theaters and continues to add to its record-breaking totals.
This just goes to show everyone that you really never know what films will resonate with moviegoers and to what extent.
