Conference room 6A was packed Friday afternoon for Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel, with fans enthusiastically anticipating announcements from Marvel Comics, knowing that this is where many secret projects are introduced to readers. Once again, Nick Lowe was moderating and was joined by a whose-who of Marvel Comics: C.B. Cebulski, Darren Shan, Lauren Bisom, Christopher Cantwell, Ram V, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and a surprise visit from Jonathan Hickman!
Don’t miss all the art and official series summaries for each title revealed and find out more on why Hickman was at the panel here.
Here’s a breakdown of what we saw:
Marvel will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ghost Rider. Every issue has been stand-alone with a recurring mystery so far in the series. This all leads to a race that all of the seedy characters have to compete to gain the favor of the devil. Radical.
Lauren Bisom spoke about the three-issue one-shots, with Moon Girl teaming up with some of the universe’s biggest heroes, looking for her Devil Dinosaur. The X-Men mini will be on the moon, and as we know, it is where the Summers House is. Bisom said this is a perfect jumping-on point in preparation for the animated series.
Christopher Cantwell let the audience know Iron Man #25 is his last issue. The story will focus on an Iron Man day in the city of New York. A raw, basic story where Tony tries to save one person. Cantwell said he wanted it to feel like Edge of the Earth movie.
Cantwell also gave details on his upcoming Sub-Mariner series. It’s a future tale of Namor. “Most of the heroes have left the earth to fight the Kree after they flooded the earth, so Atlantis has gotten a lot of new real estate.”
Ram V discussed his Symbiote stories, starting with Venom. Eddie Brock is the King in Black and is at the end of the universe, while his son Dylan is on Earth with the original symbiote.
Jackson Lanzing talked about how sitting next to Hickman was fitting, as they wanted to look at Cap’s shield, this symbol, and what it means the same way Hickman looks at symbols.
Collin and Jackson had such positive energy it made me want to pick up and read their books. They clearly love what they are doing.
Hickman was cryptic about his mysterious project. Said, “I’ve been working on this for three years. It’s probably one my favorite things I’ve ever written for Marvel.”
When pointing to the teaser image, Hickman said “This is gibberish, but it won’t be gibberish when it comes out.”
Overall, it was an epic panel, and the audience even got a special variant issue of New Mutants #27. It’s panels like this that make braving the crowds of Comic-Con worth it.
