Jonathan Hickman teases 2023 project with Valerio Schiti that’s “Sandman for the Marvel universe”

A new project by Hickman and Schiti’s was announced at the Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing panel.

The MARVEL COMICS: NEXT BIG THING panel just ended, and fans’ heads are spinning from all the reveals. Check them all out here. One thing revealed that nobody had any idea was coming involved a mysterious new project by Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti.

It was curious to see Hickman at the panel as he wasn’t asked to speak until the very last moments. Once the panel was nearing its end, a graphic–shown below–revealed some text and the promise of something new in 2023.

Marvel Comics teases mysterious project with Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti

Details were scarce, but Hickman said this project has been in the works for three years and it was described as “Sandman for the Marvel universe.” Okay, I’m sold. Hickman also shared that when he rejoined Marvel, he pitched this upcoming idea and HOX and POX. At the time, Marvel gave the greenlight to HOX and POX.

When pointing to the teaser image, Hickman said, “This is gibberish, but it won’t be gibberish when it comes out.”

Hickman also said that this project is “probably my favorite thing I’ve written for Marvel.” If it’s his favorite thing and House of X and Powers of X was so damn good, what are we in for?

Given the graphic is a sea of stars, one can imagine this story is somehow cosmic or space related. Only time well till though. Hickman recently teased what comes next in AIPT’s X-Men Monday, don’t miss it. From the article:

AIPT: Dave (Comic Book Herald) was wondering if your new Marvel projects connect to the work you’ve done on X-Men in any way. Or will they be something completely different?

Jonathan: It’s probably too early to talk about my next thing. Especially in any way that would answer your question in a satisfying manner, but it’s definitely not X-related. In fact, unless I come back into the office to do something later on, I’ll intentionally steer clear of doing ‘mutant stuff.’

At best it would feel like commentary, and at worst something like that would probably read as me ‘writing over’ everyone. And that, obviously, doesn’t interest me at all.

Stay tuned to AIPT as we give you up-to-the-minute information on this upcoming project.
