Jed MacKay on the mega twist in ‘Strange’ and the future of the series

Who is the Harvestman? Jed MacKay comments on the identity reveal at the end of ‘Strange’ #5.

If you’ve been reading Strange by Jed MacKay and Marcelo Ferreira, you know the magical realms of Marvel are vast and complicated. So complicated and intriguing, but after reading Strange #5 out today, mind-melting, too.

In the new issue, a major revelation is revealed on the final page, and to peer behind the curtain, AIPT got a chance to ask MacKay a few questions.

Spoilers ahead for Strange #5.

After reading Strange #5, you may have learned the very dead Doctor Strange is in fact alive, at least in a blinking and talking sort of way. As we’ve slowly learned, the mysterious new character known as the Harvestman is death’s Sorcerer Supreme and also happens to be Stephen Strange.

AIPT: The cliffhanger seems to suggest Doctor Strange, aka the Harvestman, is quite old. Can you give us a hint as to how long he’s been the Harvestman?

Jed MacKay: That’s not really the angle- Strange has been the Harvestman since his death- his new mistress would have long had a plan for a deceased Sorcerer Supreme. His different appearance is more indicative of his current station- and to try and throw off a little suspicion of who actually was behind the mask, haha.

AIPT: Five issues in and we’re learning about something quite epic as you add new ideas to the Marvel tapestry, how far out have you plotted the Harvestman element and this story arc?

We’re about halfway through this chapter in the lives/deaths of the Stranges, but there’s plenty more planned! Bad guys to vanquish, hearts to break anew, and grand triumphs and defeats- in short, all the STRANGE business you’ve come to expect!

AIPT: The Harvestman vs. Doctor Strange…are they equal or does one of them win this fight?

Hard to say- but at the end of the day?

Doctor Strange is alive, and therefore has something to lose.
