‘We Got a Dog’ review: Horror short gives audiences what they want

Bad doggie.

We Got a Dog is a horror short playing at Popcorn Frights that checks off all the boxes. When Morgan (Morgan Taylor) arrives home one night, her boyfriend Mason (Mason Conrad) has a surprise for her. She has her reservations, but nothing can prepare her for what is next.

Filmmaker Ryan Valdez keeps his story to the point. Even before the rising action, there is a sense that something is off. The music by Kyle McCuiston builds tension while Valdez uses classic horror camerawork to keep audiences on edge. The initial shot of the dog is especially good.

There is no wasted motion in We Got a Dog as things proceed to their natural conclusion. It is all about setting a feeling of dread until the final credits roll. Things never feel rushed and the final shot is the type of scare that will bring a smile to your face.
