‘The Barn: Part II’ review: Retro slasher is a fun watch for horror fans

Check it out!

The Barn: Part II is a classic slasher making its world premiere at the Popcorn Frights Film Festival. Three years have passed since the first film and the Halloween ban has been lifted in Helen’s Valley. The sorority girls of Gamma Tau Psi are holding an offsite haunted house. When uninvited trick-or-treaters from the past decide to drop in, the blood begins to flow.

The movie never takes itself too seriously. As much a send up as an homage to 1980s B-horror, The Barn: Part II is all about delivering laughs. The comedy does not reside in the characters – they are all very serious for the most part. Most of the humor can be found in the kills. Creative kills can be the best part in slashers. It is not so much a matter of who is going to die – that is pretty easy to figure out early on – but how it is going to happen. The Barn: Part II keeps things relatively simple with lots of beheadings and dismemberments. It never gets stale thanks to some great practical effects.

These effects are the stand out of The Barn: Part II. The fate of each victim perfectly straddles the line between over the top silliness and straight up gross. There is lots of blood and face ripping, and each one will elicit a reaction from audiences. Like any good cheesy horror movie, these are the scenes that audiences will remember most.

The characters are not much different than are usually found in this type of film, while the story is straightforward. Along with the visually impressive murders, there are a number of known names from the horror community that will stand out. Joe Bob Briggs, Diana Prince, Linnea Quigley, and Lloyd Kaufman, Ari Lehman all make appearances adding to the retro feel and fun of The Barn: Part II.
