‘Los Espookys’ season 2 episode 2 review: Creating an exemplary monster

Los Espookys does it for the kids.

Halloween is around the corner so what better time was there for Los Espookys to return for its second season last week. In the most recent episode, the gang are hired to scare a class of kids straight while they also manage their own personal problems.

In the previous review I discussed the disappointing special effects the crew implement in their jobs. However, this week makes it clear that its purposeful to cater to the comedic side of the series. It’s very campy and plays with the outrageousness of the entire scene. They weren’t completely on board with their client’s specifications, but they go through with it like a champ. And, who knows? Children are highly gullible so it could have worked.

Los Espookys has a definite type of random humor that is personified most by co-creator Ana Fabrega and her character Tati. She is so enigmatic and enchanting with her childlike innocent aloofness. She can play games of finding coins with a metal detector and seamlessly blend into a classroom of youths. Then later, she mingles with high society and plays matchmaker for her sister. She can sound so mature and convincing despite what we know of her. Tati is always a delight.

The episode also plays with the theme of the outsider in contrasting scenes. As a favor for his mom, Renaldo brings in a potential employee. Her very professional PowerPoint presentation and overly positive demeanor demonstrates how poor of a culture fit the overachiever would be. In a less funny situation, Úrsula finds herself at a get together with Juan Carlos and his upper crust friends. It speaks to how the rich can be so callous and out of touch with the real world to the point they condone blatant misogyny.

The series also does a good job rounding out its world by developing the Los Espookys ancillary characters further. And they do have lots of character from the self-absorbed Pony to the equally self-absorbed Ambassador Gibbons to Water’s Shadow. Gibbons looks to take care of her mirror twin and Andrés inner demon plans a career change. In the case of Water’s Shadow, it’s clearly absurd for her to join the workforce but yet she has some thought provoking views on employment and internships. Their ridiculousness takes the comedy up another notch and it makes the main group seem normal in comparison.

“Bibi’s” is filled with the typical random yet entertaining humor while building upon the world and adding depth to the secondary characters of the series.

New episodes of Los Espookys drop Fridays on HBO.

In a show with many memorable characters, Tati stands out this episode
The outlandish side stories of the secondary characters are amusing and sometimes insightful.
Andrés is turning into a spoiled brat without any of his endearing qualities.
