Kids vs. Aliens is a nice change of pace for Fantastic Fest. Yes, it is a genre film and it has the blood and gore that is common to many of the movies found during the festival, but its almost lighthearted look at childhood and just being a kid is something not seen as much. Director Jason Eisner spoke about his movie leading up to its world premiere.
One of things that was most important to Eisner is making Kids vs. Aliens as real as possible. He wanted to make sure the closeness of the cast came across the screen. In order to help facilitate that, he took his young cast out to the arcade to have them bond. His planned worked to perfection and the film’s chemistry is great and is the biggest part of its appeal.
As fun as the title may sound, things can get pretty gory, and the language is definitely not family friendly. This goes back to the authenticity Eisner wanted in the movie. He wanted the children of Kids vs. Aliens to sound like real people. He looked back on his past and even saw how the young actors behaved when their parents were not around. The film may be about a fantastic battle, but the realness of the characters stands out.
There are always hard decisions to make at film festivals. This is not the case with Kids vs. Aliens as there is nothing like it at Fantastic Fest.
