On Friday, Justin Kroll of Deadline exclusively revealed that Babak Anvari has been selected to helm a direct sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield, which is currently in active development. We’ve known about the film since early 2021 (and that Joe Barton is writing the script), but this is the first major news that’s been reported about the project since then.
Anvari isn’t a household name yet, but he’s begun to build a great reputation in horror circles with films like Under the Shadow (which won him a BAFTA award for Outstanding Debut Filmmaker) and Wounds.
As for the Cloverfield sequel itself, fans are still completely in the dark about the plot. One of the prevailing theories is that the film will show the events from the original film from a different perspective — perhaps even as a more conventional movie rather than found footage.
It’s worth noting, however, that this is the first Cloverfield movie where audiences have had any official advance notice of it prior to the first trailer being released. Prior to this installment in the franchise, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and The Cloverfield Paradox all came as a huge surprise when we got our first glimpse of them.
Perhaps this is a sign that Paramount really is looking at making a more standard monster/kaiju disaster movie this time around.
