Humberto Ramos was the guest of honor at NYCC’s Marvel Fanfare panel today. Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Executive Editor Nick Lowe flanked Ramos as the trio detailed the upcoming Strange Academy, shared Spider-Man artwork, and answered fan questions.
The group started by sharing some never before seen Strange Academy artwork. Ramos’s interiors show the magical students opening their third eyes to clean a bathroom, of all things. This upcoming volume is “a culmination of everything [Ramos and writer Skottie Young] have been building there,” according to Lowe. They also shared a pair of new covers drawn by Ramos for Strange Academy.
Ramos’s variant covers for Spider-Man issues #1 and #2 were shared on screen next. Somehow, Ramos packed just about every Spider-character onto his cover for issue #1, and for issue #2 he wanted to show a different perspective of New York City and Spider-Woman. He commented on how NYC is a character in and of itself in the Marvel universe and he wanted his cover to show that.
Ramos then talked about growing up in Mexico and reading Spider-Man books. They were packaged together weekly back then, and caught up with the original stories so quickly that the Mexican comics started telling their own stories. The audience roared in laughter when Ramos talked about how one story decided Gwen Stacy wouldn’t die her tragic death in The Amazing Spider-Man #121 and instead would marry Peter Parker. “His one true love,” Cebulski bravely commented.
The panel ended with a quick Q&A session with the audience. When asked about the relationship between Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios, Lowe said the comics always try to be ten years ahead of the MCU in terms of storytelling. Cebulski described all of Marvel as a body with the comics being the heart that “pumps blood into the body.”
Ramos talked about bringing his Mexican heritage into his art and character designs before being asked by an adorable child (wearing a Spider-Man hat) for advice on how to become an artist for Marvel. “Draw for fun,” he said, and then gifted the fan a Peach Momoko Amazing Spider-Man #6 virgin variant.
