New ‘Batman/Spawn’ #1 covers by comics veterans revealed

‘Batman Spawn’ #1 will feature multiple covers plus get Barnes & Noble store release.

We first learned about a new Batman/Spawn team-up at San Diego Comic Con and today, we’ve learned a bit more at New York Comic Con. We got even more gorgeous art to ogle at the Image Comics & SPAWN’S 30th Anniversary! Spotlight on Todd McFarlane panel that took place at 4:30 p.m. ET. McFarlane, who is coming off the high of some new Spawn movie news, revealed a treasure trove of creators is supplying variant covers.

He and Greg Capullo were in attendance at the panel to discuss the highly anticipated new one-shot in December.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

“We just want to create one of those books for the collectors today, where they go, ‘remember when that came out?'” says McFarlane. He also compared it to The Dark Knight Returns, visually thanks to Capullo’s impeccable work. McFarlane said Capullo is the best Spawn artist ever and the best Batman artist of a generation. “You’re just trying to make my bald head turn red,” Capullo replied. Capullo also added this is their best work together ever.

“Anybody who gets this book, it’s like an amusement park ride that’s just filled with thrills,” said Capullo.

If you’re looking for story details, we did get a smidge, and it involves love. McFarlane said it’s the love of Spawn’s wife, Wanda, and for Batman, it’s his mother, Martha. Do the heroes connect on that level, one might think so.

Artists delivering Batman Spawn #1 variant covers include Jorge Jimenez, Greg Capullo, Gabrial Dell Otto, J. Scott Campbell, and Sean Murphy. They were added to covers already revealed featuring art, including Jason Fabok, Mattina, and more.

In addition to revealing the covers, it was also announced that Batman/Spawn #1 would also be available at Barnes & Noble stores – the first mainline DC comic book they’ve carried since Detective Comics #1000 in 2019 – with an exclusive variant from Todd & Greg.

So what’s Batman Spawn #1 about?

Two dark heroes, cursed by tragedy, find their paths crossing again…but not by choice! What sinister foe is at work, pitting the Dark Knight against the Hellspawn? From the shadows of Gotham City to New York City, this epic event is the blockbuster you’ve been waiting almost two decades for!
