NYCC 2022: Chloe Grace Moretz says her love of gaming drew her to ‘Peripheral’

News and notes from the Peripheral panel at NYCC 2022.

The cast and crew of Amazon Prime’s latest sci-fi thriller Peripheral took to the Main Stage at New York Comic Con on Saturday to discuss the series and premiere exclusive clips. During the panel, series lead Chloe Grace Moretz (KickAss) said she connected to her character’s love of gaming.

“I actually was a really big fan of the book, to begin with,” Moretz said. “And so, when we first had our meeting together — I want to say, like, three years ago — I really connected to Flynne Fisher. She’s from North Carolina, and she has this sort of love of gaming. And that’s something I really relied upon in my teenage years especially.”

Novelist William Gibson gave Executive Producer Vincenzo Natali his 2014 book Peripheral early on to adapt as a film, but Natali felt it was too much material for a movie. “There’s no way this is a movie because it’s a very layered and textured, highly complex story with many characters,” Natali said. “But it could be a TV series.”

Executive Producer Jonathan Nolan has long been drawn to Gibson’s work. “I watched in bewilderment for 20 years as every filmmaker, myself included, riffed on all the ideas in his books and no one actually had the guts to adapt from the source,”

“Any time that sci-fi has a mix of world-building and that kind of emotional intimacy and resonance,” said Lisa Joy, Nolan’s co-producer on Westworld, on what drew her to the material. “I read the story of Flynne Fisher, and there’s something so relatable about this small-town girl. It took me right back to Jersey. You know, yearning for what the future might be, who she might fall in love with, kind of scared about the world, kind of wondering what kind of impact she can make.”

“For me to be able to jump into a character,” Moretz said, “and show this journey of this girl who’s going to future London, and yeah, the future may be filled with a little bit of doom but for it to possibly be a roadmap to bettering their current world, there’s just so many layers to it.”

Peripheral premieres on Prime Video on October 21st.
