‘Los Espookys’ season 2 episode 5 review: Setting the stage for an explosive election

Los Espookys get political and digital.

In the season two penultimate episode of Los Espookys, the election for president is heating up with various characters taking sides. The crew also receive their next job, which involves an actress on a long running television sitcom.

The election storyline takes some interesting turns with some unlikely people (or demons) working against the current regime. There is a nice little episodic arc that shows Melanie Gibbons and her motivations against a candidate. In addition, the ambassador and introduction of the Secretary of State are a satire of American foreign policy. The show doesn’t hold back in explaining their reasons, and their ditzy and clueless portrayals reflect the creators’ opinions on the diplomacy tactics of the neighbors from the north.

Renaldo’s investigation into his beauty queen haunting gets creepy when he visits the other contestants to find out what they can remember from the tragic event. The overall mood is unnerving with how brainwashed the women feel along with their inability to revert from beauty pageant mode to regular person. The groundwork is beginning to be laid towards how everything is connected. There is how the former Miss Nuestra Belleza Latina was tied to a powerful man, and how Renaldo’s eureka moment implies she’s involved with the misogynistic campaign. After hearing the different contestant accounts, I also like the idea of a Los Espookys type team responsible for Karina’s disappearance.

The actual job this week takes us behind the scenes of the sitcom that has played in the background at times this season featuring a man and his overbearing mother-in-law. It’s a change of pace having the crew use a digital approach and it provides a little bit more refinement to the effects in previous episodes. Things become bizarre when we gain some insight on Renaldo’s father. It’s unexpected and I don’t know what to make of it, but even Renaldo and his sister are in as much shock.

Elsewhere, Andrés seems to hit rock bottom with no one willing to take him in. A just outcome considering how many bridges he’s burned and hopefully this will lead to him finally changing his ways. But first, he hast to go into exile, with all the theatrics you would expect including some fierce outfits. Meanwhile, Tati’s days of being an author come to a swift end. It’s funny to see how her brain works and at least she finally understands what she was doing was wrong. That just means she can move on to her next odd job on Los Espookys (developing tracking numbers for packages?!).

“El Virus” does a good job interconnecting different elements from the season to build to the finale. The presidential campaign looks to be explosive with all these different sides with their own agendas. However, even smaller details aren’t overlooked with the sitcom played in the background taking a role.

New episodes of Los Espookys drop Fridays on HBO.

The satirical take on American diplomacy doesn't hold back.
All the gags and jokes are on point from going into Tati's brain to the responses to a computer virus.
The scene about Renaldo's father is bizarre and I don't know what to make of it.
