The bundle will feature 45 digital issues of Heavy Metal Magazine to celebrate the iconic publisher’s 45th anniversary this year. Legendary issues in the bundle include the very first issue from April 1977, the July 1977 issue featuring cover art and a story by Mœbius, the very first-holiday issue with a cover from Jean Solé, issue #276 featuring Jack Kirby’s Lord of Light artwork, and issue #300 which celebrates a new era of Heavy Metal.

“After two hugely successful drops with Humble Bundle, we decided it was time to fully open the Heavy Metal vaults for this truly special third drop,” said Kris Longo, Heavy Metal Associate Publisher & Chief Sales Officer. “To wrap our 45th anniversary year with this comprehensive look at Heavy Metal’s legacy is something our fans will surely love, and hopefully new fans will embrace too. And there’s no better partner for this than Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.”

Los Angeles, CA – Heavy Metal, the premier storyteller of cutting edge science fiction, fantasy and horror content, is thrilled to announce another partnership with Humble Bundle to launch The Bleeding Heart of Heavy Metal, worth $675, which supports the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The bundle is available to purchase now as a pay-what-you-want model and runs for the next 21 days.

The Bleeding Heart bundle, running from now, October 20th at 11am PST until November 10th at 11am PST, includes 45 of Heavy Metal’s classic and landmark issues, including the very first issue from April 1977, the very first holiday issue with a cover from Jean Solé, and a number of legendary highlights from the magazine’s 45-year run. Classic issues from 1977 until the present day include the iconic cover artwork of Greg Hildebrandt, Simon Bisley, Mœbius, Jack Kirby, Chris Achiellios, Phillipe Druillet and many more.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of the bundle support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the legal rights of the comic arts community. With a membership that includes creators, publishers, retailers, educators, librarians, and fans, the CBLDF has defended dozens of First Amendment cases in courts across the United States and led important educational initiatives promoting comics literacy and free expression.

All of the funds for charity raised from Heavy Metal’s previous bundle went toward the legal expenses associated with the CBLDF’s successful defense of Gender Queer in the Virginia Beach obscenity case, in which the petitioner attacked not only that particular book but all comics with mature content. Heavy Metal was part of the case that gave rise to the CLBDF’s founding, so it’s wonderfully monumental that Heavy Metal, Humble Bundle, and fandom will unite once again to protect the next generation of the comic arts.

“In 1986, the arrest of a comic shop manager for selling Heavy Metal led to the founding of our organization,” states Jeff Trexler, Interim Director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. “As yet another wave of censorship threatens access to the comic arts, we’re truly grateful to Heavy Metal, Humble Bundle, and everyone who gets this stunning collection of cutting-edge creativity for your supermassive support.”

Humble Bundle offers limited-time collections of games, books, software, and more. Fans can simply pay what they want and choose where their money goes, including to charity. Most bundles come in tiers starting at only $1. The Humble community has contributed over $200,000,000 to charity since 2010, making an amazing difference to causes all over the world.

“We’re excited to work with Heavy Metal to bring this bundle of iconic science-fiction and fantasy to our comic-loving Humble community,” said Kamini Tiwari, Humble’s Vice President of Social Impact. “It’s a great opportunity for readers to see for themselves why Heavy Metal has earned a place in graphic-fiction history, all while supporting a charity doing important work fighting censorship and championing free expression.”
