Spoilers ahead for Deadpool #1. You’ve been warned. For more on Deadpool #1, read our review.
Deadpool #1 launches a new ongoing series in comic shops this week, featuring writer Alyssa Wong and artist Martín Cóccolo. It’s an action fest with some good comedy, too. Surprisingly, there’s a bit of romance, or at least with Deadpool, a crush that will take over his every thought.
Deadpool has had many relationships over the years, be it Rogue, Death herself, and he was once married to Dracula’s bride Shiklah. Deadpool is single again, and he’s open to swiping right.
The new romance emerges in a quick flashback–you’ll need to read the comic to get the complete picture–and Deadpool is auditioning for an assassins group. We learn that Deadpool always wanted to be an elite and fashionable assassin. One complication is that Deadpool’s point of contact is the super dreamy Valentine Vuong.

So dreamy the very sight of Valentine gets Deadpool rambling. I’m no expert on names, but a quick Google search shows Vuong can mean: king or monarch, best or strongest of its type, grand, great, to rule, to reign over. Now that’s a name fit for Deadpool!
To seal the deal, Valentine even penetrates Deadpool! Okay, sure, it appears there’s something Valentine is injecting him with for his mission, but still.

You know it’s serious since Deadpool says the wrong things and actually regrets it for once.

Wong smartly uses this crush to raise the stakes for Deadpool, as he will never see them again if he doesn’t accomplish the hit. We’ll have to read Deadpool #2 to see how that hit goes–there’s a timer on it and everything–but when it comes to love and death, Deadpool has certainly had a rocky history with both.
What do you think, readers, will Deadpool seal the deal with Valentine? It certainly makes sense Deadpool would fall for a fellow assassin.
