James Tynion IV launching Tiny Onion Studios at Dark Horse Comics

James Tynion IV is bringing Substack comics and Tiny Onion Studios to Dark Horse.

THR has the exclusive news that James Tynion IV is headed to Dark Horse, along with the comics he’s created on Substack over the last year. The collaboration will also include new materials produced by his Tiny Onion Studios. Titles first appearing on Tynion’s Substack include Blue Book, which will launch in February 2023 via Dark Horse, and The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos which will follow in June 2023.

If you’re keeping track at home, this is the fifth creator to establish a relationship with Dark Horse Comics in the last year. Tynion joins Kevin Smith, who launched Secret Stash Press, Matt Kindt launching Flux House, Eric Powell’s Albatross Funnybooks, and Stan Sakai launching Dogu Publishing at the publisher. Dark Horse Comics can now add Tiny Onion Studios to a growing list of superstar creators in their lineup.

Many creators have started Substacks in the last year, like Saladin Ahmed, Jonathan Hickman, Molly Ostertag, Scott Snyder, and James Tynion IV, who led the charge by stipulating he was leaving Batman to pursue creator-owned work. Tynion pointed out that going forward, some titles may start on Substack while others are released via Dark Horse in print directly.

This new endeavor will give his “True Weird” stories a proper home.

Blue Book and Christopher Chaos are just the beginning. There’s a whole universe of characters and concepts around the Christopher Chaos title I’m hoping that Tate, Isaac, and I get to explore in our time there,” says Tynion. “Beyond that, there are so many stories in the ‘True Weird’ genre that I think are ripe to be told in the comics form. And that’s not counting all of the fun we’ve got in store for readers in the pages of Blue Book itself. We’ll be deciding title by title what makes sense to debut first in print and what will make a fun addition to the comics I debut in my Substack newsletter.”

THR also revealed variant covers for the upcoming Blue Book, which Tynion writes with Michael Avon Oeming drawing and Aditya Bidikar lettering. All of the covers are by Oeming. Check those out below.
