‘Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse’ review: Pegasus with a meth addiction

Another broadcast.

Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse is a documentary that covers one of the most well-known yet least talked about figures in American folklore. With origins dating back to the 1700s, the Jersey Devil has been a part of East Coast legend for centuries. The latest release from Small Town Monsters looks into the history of the cryptid using a mix of interviews and dramatizations.

The film is something of a return to form for Seth Breedlove and his crew. STM has always managed to differentiate themselves from other cryptid hunters by taking a more realistic approach. Obviously, the subject matter lends itself to the introduction of fantastic elements, but The Jersey Devil curse is as grounded as this type of movie can be. It also makes for a more interesting watch as it comes off as more informative instead of a sensational.

The Jersey Devil alternates between reenactments and talking heads. In an interesting departure, the subjects seem less concerned with proving the existence of the creature. Instead, they discuss the religious and social circumstances surrounding its origins and the subsequent resurgences in popularity over the years. In effect, the documentary becomes just as much about the Devil’s effect on the region and its people as it is about the figure itself.

The decision to not try to sway the audience in either direction ends up being the difference maker. Instead of listening for flaws or waiting for the piece of undeniable evidence, the film takes center stage. Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse takes advantage of this with strong use of dramatizations and interviewees.

Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse is available on Cable VOD and Digital HD
