Last week, Mythic Quest returned for its third season. The two-episode premiere served as a transition of sorts with a farewell to C.W. Longbottom and the different characters setting out on their respective paths. Though at the end, we learn that GrimPop isn’t too far away from the rest of the gang.
The episode puts together the unlikely trio of Poppy, Rachel, and Jo to great effect. They all seem lost to a degree and feel a girls’ brunch will provide the positive reinforcement they need. There is some awkwardness since it’s a grouping we haven’t seen much of, but it works comedically. Particularly the more booze they consume, the bigger hot messes both Poppy and Rachel become.
What’s a refreshing change is Jo’s turn through all of it. She’s known as the hard-nosed enforcer in the office, but we see a softer side to her. Jessie Ennis hits that sweet spot of exhibiting a little desire to connect with others without making it feel uncharacteristic for Jo. Her means of venting is on brand and provides some amusing visuals. The scenes were probably as fun to film as they are to watch. It also touches a spot in your heart when she admits she has friends.
Elsewhere, David receives the news that Mythic Quest will receive a movie adaptation and he is pegged to be an executive producer. One of Ian’s biggest unfulfilled bucket list accomplishments was to turn the video game into a film so of course, David goes downstairs to gloat. His experiences at GrimPop speak to the absurdity of the tech industry’s modern and futuristic workplaces with his inability to leave. Furthermore, it demonstrates that even though David is flying high as the new head of the company, he’s still the sorry sad sack we’ve known the entire series.
Speaking of things staying the same, Brad is back to his normal diabolical scheming. His stay in prison hasn’t changed him at all, and this time he has his grips into former HR lead, Carol. It’s so twisted that he exploits her desire to enact positive change to carry out his nefarious plans, and if things go awry, he already has a patsy. Carol always seemed above the office shenanigans so hopefully she can come to her senses.
One thing Mythic Quest has always done is tap into the current pop culture zeitgeist and butcher it in hilarious ways. Truer words haven’t been said about the toxic fandom of video game film adaptations. From the way negative campaigns begin to the hard to please nature of the gamers. In addition, they dive into the new methods to monetize content such as NFTs. With all of that, it’s poor community manager, Sue Gorgon, taking the brunt of the abuse.
This week’s episode has some entertaining character groupings while poking fun at the current industry trends and practices.
