Who is Avenger Prime? We get new clues in ‘Avengers Assemble Alpha’

Could Avenger Prime be a character we’ve known for some time?

Spoilers Ahead for Avengers Forever Infinity and Avengers Assemble Alpha. You’ve been warned.

For a few months, we’ve known Avenger Prime as a key character in Jason Aaron’s finale to his Avengers run at Marvel Comics. Who the person is under the mask, however, has yet to be revealed. That said, Avengers Assemble Alpha may hold some clues.

Before we get to Avengers Assemble Alpha #1, let’s pull up the information we’ve had for a few weeks. Starting with Avengers Forever Infinity, we glimpse Avengers Prime in the fourth issue on April 13th.

Incredibly mysterious, the character mentions magic, which leads one to believe he’s a wielder of such things. Unfortunately, he’s cloaked, so we can’t determine who he is or even what he might look like.

Then, thanks to solicitations, we know we’re going to get his full backstory in Avengers #56, which reads:

In AVENGERS #65, learn the secrets of Avenger Prime, the most important Avenger in the Multiverse! He’s spent years manning a watchtower at the heart of all creation all by himself. Now his story can be told, as he suddenly finds himself no longer alone, but instead surrounded by an unbelievable gathering of heroes.

The solicitation connects to Avengers Forever Infinity #4, with Avenger Prime discussing the need to bring Avengers from the multiverse together for one last battle. The only new information here is that he’s been solitary for a long time. Maybe it’s a self-inflicted penance for his behavior?

Moving on to today’s Avengers Assemble Alpha #1, we glimpse him with his cloak off. Dressed in a suit, one cannot miss the fact that he’s wearing a green tie and a helmet worn by Thor or maybe Jane Foster. We can see there are two Thor helmets after all.

White, and of the standard build, there isn’t much more to go on.

The only other detail we have is Mephisto calling him an “old buddy” and seeing Avenger Prime indeed using some magic or force power.

Green tie, magical abilities, a desire to wear Thor’s helm…could Avenger Prime be Loki? That’d be my guess, but we’ll likely find out soon, or at the very least, when Avengers #65 comes out in comic shops on February 2nd.

What do you think, reader, do these details amount to enough to make a guess? Who do you think Avenger Prime is?
