Over the weekend, HBO released the first trailer for its long-awaited adaptation of The Last Of Us. The nine-episode series takes place in a world where an outbreak of a mutant fungus has begun turning people into walking nightmares. Joel (Pedro Pascal) is tasked with smuggling a 14-year-old girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of a quarantine zone run by a totalitarian group of survivors.
As you might imagine, the stakes end up becoming much higher as the pair makes their journey together.
Full disclosure: I have not played the video game this series is based on, which by all accounts is fantastic. I’m also pretty burned out on zombie stories — even ones where the undead are technically mutated creatures.
That said, the trailer for this show looks so good that I’m going to at least need to check out the first episode when it premieres on January 15. In addition to the superb cast and high production values, the story appears to be much more than your standard “Humans are the real monsters” zombie tale (although that will no doubt play a large part in the narrative).
Read HBO’s description for the series below along with some official preview images:
THE LAST OF US takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
