Peter Parker’s ex has new superpower calling back to ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #42

Face it, tiger… Mary Jane just hit the jackpot!

Spoilers ahead for Mary Jane & Black Cat #1. You’ve been warned.

Dark Web is heating up, especially in the tie-in issues, and that’s never more obvious than in Mary Jane & Black Cat #1. Out today, the miniseries features Black Cat dodging newspapers with teeth and Mary Jane…well, she’s a little different too.

As we saw in the preview, Black Cat noticed Mary Jane had superpowers, but what those powers are wasn’t revealed until today.

At first, it’s unclear what kind of powers she has, but it becomes a bit clearer about ten pages into the book. She calls upon a new power, and we see above her head three giant symbols.

Yep, those are luck-based powers. Specifically, it appears she needs to hit the “jackpot” to gain a new power similar to using a slot machine in a casino. It’s not clear what the symbols have to do with the power, but it’s very clear she has to hit a winning combo to gain a good power. That’s because later in the issue, she doesn’t get a winning trio of symbols, and things go haywire.

As we see later in the issue, she can miss the jackpot entirely and get weird and even inhibitive powers. Check out this goopy mess she got later in the issue:

Yeah, that’s not helping anybody. It’s a neat concept to give Mary Jane powers, and while there’s no explanation as to how she go them–she’s staying tight-lipped and won’t tell Black Cat–it’s a clever idea since Black Cat has her own luck powers. Her powers are far different, of course, since she has a bad luck aura to use against her opponents.

Maybe it’s Black Cat that’s messing with her powers in the first place, then?

Either way, it seems when Mary Jane hits the jackpot, she means it in an entirely new way! That’s only a fraction of what happens in this issue, though, and I highly recommend you check it out now.

Given there’s a superhero already called Jackpot that isn’t Mary Jane, we’ll see what sort of name MJ comes up with if these powers stick.
