‘Tim Drake: Robin’ #4 is another slam dunk

Tim Drake: Robin #4 continues its thrilling story with great narrative choices.

Meghan Fitzmartin and Riley Rossmo have crafted one of the most underrated books at DC right now. After going 11 years without an ongoing series, Tim Drake was long overdue for the spotlight. Fitzmartin has crafted a true mystery within the pages of Tim Drake: Robin while simultaneously developing Tim’s character. This issue is no different than its predecessors, as the plot continues to thicken for the Marina’s local hero.

One thing that has made the series so strong is the amount of dialogue. Although this is often a hit or miss tool for writers, Fitzmartin is able to utilize monologuing to enter Tim’s mind to help make the mystery more compelling. This is a fun trick that helps readers attempt to solve it with Tim. This also allows for insight into Tim’s relationship with Bernard. This is something that may seem a little wordy at times, but the payoff is always immediate. Not many writers can pull something like this off, but in a book like this it’s almost necessary. Moreover, the attention to detail Fitzmartin puts in to ensure that the readers can work to solve the mystery with Tim is something that is seamlessly interwoven into the story.

Fitzmartin is writing two stories within this issue: the mystery of the marina and the relationship with Bernard. Tim’s relationship with Bernard has been a mainstay throughout the series, and for good reason. Fitzmartin writes one of the most human relationships in comics, as we can see both Tim’s shyness and his confidence at play. The balancing act between both stories is done through ensuring their relationship continues to develop along with the story. Frankly, the issue is a reminder of how to deliver a relationship along with a overarching story while not losing its footing.

Riley Rossmo has continued to show everyone why he was the perfect artist for this series. Every page is expressive and adds to the noir elements of the story. It’s also the right kind of “comic-booky” art that has details vividly pop on the page. Additionally, with Lee Loughridge on colors, the story is only highlighted by the luminous hues. Together, the pair add to the story through their great work.

Tim Drake: Robin has been a severely underrated book that has all the elements necessary for a thrilling mystery. This issue continues to push towards the conclusion of the first arc while not losing its footing. As we reach the halfway point, readers can trust that Fitzmartin is not taking her foot off the gas as the stakes only seem to get higher with each issue. Overall, Tim Drake: Robin #4 is another excellent issue in the story that advances toward its conclusion with a compelling narrative.
