‘Mythic Quest’ season 3 episode 10 review: You can never really leave

GrimPop is at risk of going under in the season three finale of Mythic Quest.

On the season three finale of Mythic Quest, Poppy is still reeling from her unsuccessful pitch for Playpen. She’s unable to find any investors and with no new money coming in, GrimPop is at risk of closing before it even really started.

This is a different low for Poppy, because unlike in the past, she doesn’t have the security of a big developer when she fails. Not only does she burry herself into programming, but she has even more peculiar behavior like actually using her office. Even Ian has no clue to snap her out of her funk. As noted by Dana, he usually fakes it until he makes it but can’t do it here.

This is a perfect opportunity for the reconciliation we were waiting for. Ian finally figures out what he can do and it’s a very raw and emotional scene. The titular food is not only a good call back from earlier in the season, but also an appropriate olive branch.

Both Rob McElhenney and Charlotte Nicdao bring a lot of vulnerability for the occasion adding to its gripping nature. It’s very grounded with Ian acknowledging his limitations and making a sincere effort. The intimate moment when they admit their love for each other is perfect to cap it off. An even better, and comedic ending is Ian eating the pizza as a gesture of his commitment to their relationship. Though it’s not romantic, but in their own special way.

Similarly, David is at his lowest following the least successful year of Mythic Quest. He’s in dire need of fresh new content and turns to his employees for the next big thing. The resulting montage reflects how difficult a good original idea can be as well as the prevalence of depression in the video game industry. The subplot is a nice parallel to the main storyline, but it does also provide a convenient means to bring back Poppy and Ian back into the Mythic Quest fold.

Finally, all the GrimPop drama has caused Dana to rethink her career. The instability with her current employers, she too wants to strike out on her own. The former tester even picks up Brad and Jo, who are looking for new opportunities. It seems like Mythic Quest is having a revolving door of cast members leaving the main company. The trio is a new grouping that should be intriguing to explore next season.

“Buffalo Chicken Pizza” delivers a moving reconciliation, a bit too convenient outcome, and a promising new direction to go for season four.

Rob McElhenney and Charlotte Nicdao once again provide the emotional depth to the episode as their characters make up.
The grouping of Dana, Jo, and Brad can lead to interesting possibilities next season.
The bringing back of Poppy and Ian to Mythic Quest seems a bit too convenient.
