[Sundance ’23] ‘Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out’: Heartwarming and funny

Keep your head up.

Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out is a family friendly adventure making its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Itsy (Emma Tremblay, Supergirl) is new to Pebble Falls and itching to return to the big city. When she has the opportunity to get into an NYU journalism program, she begins to investigate a local named Calvin (Jacob Buster, Let the Right One In) who claims his parents were kidnapped by extraterrestrials.

The film is a family friendly adventure that will be an engaging watch for all ages. Aliens Abducted My Parents does a good job of mixing childish humor for the kiddos with older comedy for older audiences. The movie does not lean too far in any direction. It is genuinely funny, but also filled with sweet and tender moments that do not overstay their welcome. Nothing ever seems inaccessible to anyone.

The characters are great with Calvin being a sympathetic lead audiences will care for. Itsy is becoming a woman and trying to move forward with her life. Watching her grow is much of the charm. The supporting cast is also strong. Though everyone plays into genre tropes, each is well done. Standouts include Itsy’s younger brother Evan (Kenneth Cummins) and ambitious classmate Heather (Landry Townsend). Even in its most predictable moments, things never get boring.

[Sundance '23] 'Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out': Heartwarming and funny

Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out follows a familiar route, but this is part of the allure. There is a nostalgic quality to the storytelling. When it does introduce a twist, it is an emotional one that adds to Cavin’s character and Itsy’s development. It is a heartwarming film that will make for great regular family viewings.

The Sundance Film Festival takes place from January 19 -29. Full lineup can be found HERE
