‘Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty’ #9 is Cap comics at their best

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9 is a gorgeous book with lots of care poured into every inch of it.

From the moment it began, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty has been consistently knocking it out of the park, carving itself out to be one of the best Captain America runs in recent memory. Issue #9 keeps the high stakes tension and combines political espionage with high-energy action sequences fit for a Cap comic.

Watching the team of Invaders come together is a joy and their witty banter is the icing on the cake. You can tell these people are old friends who know each other inside and out, and the ones who don’t (like Sharon), fit in seamlessly. I’ve seen team books struggle to juggle their cast and it makes the book feel like a missed opportunity but Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty doesn’t have that problem. Lanzing and Kelly make sure every character gets their moment and they do it seamlessly.

Reading this book, you absolutely get the sense that Lanzing and Kelly love these characters and Sentinel of Liberty is as much a celebration of Cap as it is important character development for him. Everything about this run is a love letter to the Captain America mythos, with Lanzing and Kelly nailing exactly what it is about Steve Rogers that makes him a great hero.

One thing that was great about this run was how it started by bringing Steve back to his roots, having him travel to Brooklyn to live amongst the people. Steve is a down to earth guy and he’s much more than his shield, which Lanzing and Kelly celebrate. Each character from Steve’s hometown that had an impact on him is there for this incredible fight. They say they don’t follow Cap, they follow Steve — and that’s what makes him such a great hero. The symbol didn’t make the man, the man made the symbol — and the man under the mask is incredibly noble.

Lanzing and Kelly also ease the worries of Bucky fans, setting up a plot that promises some espionage action from the Winter Soldier. Carmen Carnero has knocked it out of the park all 10 issues, and in this one, she cements Sentinel of Liberty as some of her best work yet. The action scenes perfectly portray the grandiosity of the moment and even her panel layout is inspired. From top to bottom, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9 is a gorgeous book with lots of care poured into every inch of it.
