During this Sunday’s Superbowl, Warner Bros. released the long-awaited first full trailer for The Flash. Despite Ezra Miller’s troubling offscreen behavior and James Gunn’s impending soft reboot of the DCU, the extended preview made it hard not to get excited about Barry Allen’s solo big screen adventure.
As expected, the film appears to be roughly following the 2011 Flashpoint storyline, in which Barry Allen goes back in time to stop his mother from getting murdered. This causes things with the DCU timeline to go completely wonky, creating a universe where things are very different (and Barry Allen gets to team up with a younger version of himself).
In addition to Michael Shannahan’s General Zod being alive (and causing all sorts of problems), we also get to see Sasha Calle debut as Supergirl. For us 90’s kids, however, the most exciting part was seeing Michael Keaton return as the original big screen Batman — complete with Danny Elfman’s iconic theme blaring as he leapt into action.
Also, I might be in the minority on this, but I like that Ben Affleck’s version of Batman gets one more movie. Whatever you think about how the DC Films played out during his time with them, he was an excellent Dark Knight (and he’s earned plenty of goodwill after that awesome/hilarious Dunkin’ Superbowl commercial).
The Flash is set to debut in theaters on June 16, 2023.
