‘The Umbrella Academy’ season 4: Everything you need to know

Dust off your time-traveling briefcases because The Umbrella Academy is returning for its final season on Netflix. And you don’t want to be left in the past. Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy series is based on a comic series of the same name by Gerald Way and Gabriel Bá. But with showrunner Steve Blackman’s unique adaptation of the material, we couldn’t help but fall in love.

This show is a heart-wrenching story about the Hargreeves siblings raised by Sir Reginald because of their unique superpowers. But they can’t focus on their family drama because they must constantly sacrifice everything to save the world. With highly anticipated seasons and a steady fan base, it came as a shock when news broke that the show would end after four seasons on Netflix.

But not everyone is devastated about the final season. The show’s creator Steve Blackman stated during an interview with thewrap that four seasons would be a perfect ending for the series. At the time, the fourth season hadn’t been announced by Netflix. He said, “But I think if we got to season four, it would be a great ending…I think that would be very satisfying”.

But now that it’s official we’re getting another season, here is everything we know about The Umbrella Academy season four!

The Umbrella Academy Season Four Release date

The long wait between Umbrella Academy seasons two and three wasn’t planned. The COVID pandemic delayed filming, forcing the show to air in the summer of 2022 after a two-year-long hiatus. Season one was released in February 2019, while seasons two and three dropped in June 2020 and July 2022, respectively. In August 2022, show creator Blackman announced on Instagram the series was renewed for a fourth season.

Although we don’t have a specific release date for The Umbrella Academy season four, the show is currently in production, so there’s speculation it will hit our screens in late 2023 or 2024.

All the Hargreeves Coming Back for Season Four

We believe the entire Hargreeves family is returning for season four. The main cast includes Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper), Viktor Hargreeves (Elliot Page), Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Diego Hargreeves (David Castañeda), Klaus Hargreeves (Robert Sheehan) Ben Hargreeves, (Justin H. Min) Lila Pitts, (Ritu Arya), and Number five (Aidan Gallagher).

On February 6, 2023, Netflix announced that the final season of The Umbrella Academy is currently in production. If you look closely, you can see all the Hargreeves siblings in the shot.

According to that cliffhanger ending in season three, Lisa Repo-Martell and Colm Feore will reprise their roles as Abigail and Reginald Hargreeves. We also hope to see more Sparrow academy members like Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez) in the upcoming season.

What Happened in Umbrella Academy Season Three?

As usual, Umbrella Academy season three was an emotional rollercoaster, with the Hargreaves family returning to the present after being stuck in 1963. But everything isn’t as they left it. In season three, their home is occupied by another superpowered family — The Sparrow Academy. And Reginald Hargreeves and their brother Ben are still alive.

We also learn that Sir Reginald Hargreeves is an alien with a time machine at Hotel Oblivion. His goal was to masquerade as a human while he worked on recreating the universe using the Umbrella and Sparrows Academy. Looking back, there was always something out of this world about him. He only wanted seven special kids to get through the machine’s guardian and power it to reset the universe.

But all their time traveling created the Grandfather paradox number five kept talking about, which created the Kugelblitz (black hole). That will suck in the entire universe if these heroes don’t stop it first. The third season ends with the Umbrellas returning powerless to a new timeline.

The Umbrella Academy Season Four Plot

This family is always busy saving the world; they don’t have time to deal with their traumatic childhood. And with The Umbrella Academy season four bound to introduce another villain for the Hargreeves to fight, they may not face the harsh realities of their dysfunctional family. But is the new villain someone they already know?

When asked about this new timeline, show creator Steve Blackman in an interview with Tudum, says he already has a plot mapped out for season four. So we don’t have to worry about that. He teases that viewers will be interested to see these characters struggle without an essential part of who they are — their powers.

Newly-hitched family member Luther will possibly be looking for his wife, Sloane. Considering he is no longer half-ape, what will his life look like? With Alison reunited with her family, will she give up on her siblings? The Sparrow Academy version of Ben is alive in South Korea, but what about Klaus? The season three ending with Reginald Hargreeves and his wife watching the heroes exit the elevator raises many questions. If she is alive, what else has changed in this new universe?

Will Luther tell them that their father is an alien? And are the Umbrellas and the remaining Sparrows strong enough to go against Hagreeves in this timeline? It will be interesting to see who in the family will side with Hagreeves and the power he must have accumulated.

When interviewed by Collider about the upcoming season, Allison Hargreeves (Emmy Raver-Lampman), whose complicated relationship with Luther was put to the test in season three, said, “For the first time, we don’t know where this show could go…the butterfly effect of messing with time and space and the universe. I think there’s gonna be some sort of repercussion…”

**How Many Episodes Will be in The Umbrella Academy Season Four?**

Most Netflix shows have fewer than 15 episodes. And with this show, nothing was different. The Umbrella Academy seasons one to three has had ten episodes each, but season four will have fewer episodes than expected. For The Umbrella Academy season four, we’re only getting six episodes. But don’t be too sad because, according to show creator Blackman, they will be worth every minute.

The executive producer and show creator Steve Blackman quoted a tweet claiming season four would only be six episodes long and filming could wrap in early May 2023. He said, “Six amazing episodes.” So was the account also right about when the show will wrap filming?

While this season will be its last, it will likely be as exciting, sad, weird, and filled with family drama as the previous seasons. And maybe we’ll be lucky enough to get another musical.
