‘Top Chef’ season 20 Power Rankings: Week 2

This week on Top Chef, the contestants cook rice and Last Chance Kitchen begins.

Top Chef hit the ground running for its 20th season. Sixteen contestants from all over the world came together to battle for the titular title. A vegetable related elimination challenge saw one of them leave already, but it’s back into the kitchen for another week.

Acclaimed chef, Santiago Lastra served as the guest during the quickfire. He is the man behind Kol, the only Mexican restaurant in the UK to have a Michelin star. He tasked the competitors in creating an amuse bouche served on a Ritz cracker that transported the judges across the globe in just one bite. The chefs selected one ingredient from a supplied assortment, and were then divided into groups of three. They then had to use all three of their ingredients and went head-to-head with the other members. An ultimate winner was selected from the top dish from each group.

The elimination challenge forced the contestants to use an ingredient that has sent the most chefs home: rice. There were several varieties to choose from, and they had the choice of preparation such as savory or sweet. If that weren’t enough, they needed to make servings for 100 guests and the judges, which this week included the host of Top Chef: South Africa, Lorna Maseko.

We also received our first episode of Last Chance Kitchen. The first two chefs were given the main ingredients from their most memorable finale dishes. They were then asked to make an all-new dish with the ingredients in 30 minutes.
