‘Women of Marvel’ (2023) #1 is a fun ode to Marvel’s super women

A cute, fun time that celebrates the work of the women of Marvel both on the page and behind it.

2023’s Women of Marvel is another celebratory issue for a group given the spotlight, and since March is Women’s History Month, the focus this month is, of course, on Marvel’s women. The fun thing about these issues is that the efforts to put a spotlight on whichever group in question isn’t just relegated to the characters in the books themselves, but the creators as well. Women of Marvel is brimming with so much love and passion and the end result is a really cute comic that’s worth the read.

Rebecca Roanhorse is a force to be reckoned with. Her comics work, particularly all she’s done with Echo, have been great reads. In the novel arena, Black Sun easily is one of my favorite fantasy novels and I have no qualms calling it downright brilliant. Roanhorse opens up the anthology with a cute little Jennifer Walters tale that serves as the introduction to each of the characters’ stories. Jen is presented as the lawyer for each of the female characters and it’s a fun little segment that is served well by Borelli’s cute, cartoonish artwork.

Black Cat and Silk quickly became one of my favorite duos while I was spending time catching up with Spider-Man comics recently, so Victoria Ying and Jodi Nishijima’s story about them on karaoke night was easily a treat. The story is fun and serves exactly the purpose it sets out to do: giving the girls a cute little adventure and scoring some smiles along the way. Sometimes you just want a story that’s a little ridiculous in the best way to have a good time with and that’s exactly what this is.

Melissa Flores and Stacey Lee take over the next story, which sees Kate Bishop and America Chavez team up once again. These two are one of my favorite duos in Marvel and it’s clear Flores and Lee love them just as much. America’s edges syndrome from her Made in the USA solo finally gets touched on again, with Kate trying to take care of her best friend and help her with her next steps. It’s a great story about their friendship and hopefully, a plotline that gets picked up again somewhere else later as it has huge implications for America. Flores is able to juggle such a heavy topic for the characters with a sweet and honest focus on their love for each other really well, making this an easily enjoyable addition. Lee’s artwork is extremely well suited to this story too, and the characters look great throughout.

Shawnee, Shawnelle Gibbs, and Giulia Gualazzi round out the stories with one about Ms. Marvel and Photon. I’ve always loved Captain Marvel lore and the entire cast of characters that fall under that Captain Marvel umbrella, and as much as I love Carol Danvers, I always wanted Kamala to be able to talk to other Captain Marvels too, most notably Monica Rambeau. It always felt disappointing to me that the two haven’t interacted more and to see Monica and Kamala headline this story felt like my prayers being answered in that regard. The two play off well against each other and I’d love to see more of them in the future. Having Kamran come back was a surprise, but the writers knew what they wanted to do and it ends on a great note. Gualazzi’s pencils are also really cute and fitting for this nice little story.

“Dress up Wasp” is as much an ode to Janet van Dyne’s fashion sense as it is to Erica D’urso’s pencils. The art speaks for itself on this one.

All in all, Women of Marvel is just a cute, fun time that celebrates the work of the women of Marvel both on the page and behind it. This isn’t a book that exists to shake the world and tell some genre-defining story — it’s here to be some good, lighthearted fun, and that’s exactly what it is.
