‘Wolverine’ #32 sets up a Beast beatdown

This issue shows off the dangers of an unhinged Beast.

You don’t ever want to make Wolverine mad, which is bad news because boy howdy, have Benjamin Percy and Juan Jose Ryp given Wolverine the biggest reason ever to be angry. Part 2 is out this week, which features Beast taking over X-Force and remaking it in his own image, literally. He’s cloning himself to be the intelligence part of things while he’s implemented an army of Wolverine clones to serve as the violent part of X-Force. With Wolverine seriously ticked off after killing a clone of Beast that turned into a mushroom kill-bot, it’s time for Logan to track down Beast and end this for good.

Fat chance he can accomplish that easily, however. As the opening scene in Wolverine #32 shows, an army of Logans is very dangerous and fully implemented in Beast’s plan to fix everything. He’s no longer inhibited by fellow mutants who have morals or worries about how “evil” something is, and he’s implementing his plan swiftly. This opening scene features a British resident who has stolen flowers from Krakoa and he meets a rather gruesome end thanks to Beast being judge, jury, and – using Wolverine clones – executioner.

Aside from showing how dangerous Beast is with his new toys, this issue mostly sets up where we go from here. That includes Logan confronting the Quiet Council, looping in a key Wolverine sidekick, and even establishing the one thing that could beat Beast. Lucky for Wolverine and this series, it has a sharp edge.

Ryp draws a great-looking book with tons of detail with nice volume and lighting from color artist Frank D’Armata. It doesn’t skimp on gore with heads being lopped off and Beast’s skeleton home base blending roots and organic matter in menacing interior shots. The best scene in the issue involves the Quiet Council, with Ryp capturing the gasps and shock of the Council well. Throw in Wolverine looking and acting badass in this scene, and one can see we’re in for quite a battle once Wolverine can get his hands on Beast.

Data pages feature Beast’s journal, which further shows he’s capable of rationalizing incredibly immoral and violent acts. It adds some layers to his thinking, although at this point, he’s basically a cartoonish villain. But hey, we love him for it.

Say what you will about the premise, but Percy and Ryp are clearly having a ton of fun. When they’ve got a giant walking headquarters skeleton popping claws by using full-sized Wolverine clones, you know this is about fun and not storytelling to take too seriously. It can feel a bit wonky compared to other X-Men titles, but Wolverine is leaning into horror and gore while unleashing plenty of violence.

Wolverine #32 is quite good at establishing key elements before Logan goes into hunter mode to finally kill Beast. All the pieces are in place, the violence and gore are on point, and you can’t help but enjoy it all with childlike glee.

Shows what Beast can do with a Wolverine clone army
Looks good from the gore to the fight scenes
There's action to be had, but this is mostly an issue that sets things up for Logan to do his thing
