‘Ted Lasso’ season 3 episode 9 review: Big drama between best mates

On this week’s Ted Lasso, Colin’s season long narrative comes to a head.

Previously on Ted Lasso, team captain Isaac made all the players erase any scandalous pictures and videos from their phones following Keeley’s scandal. In the process, Isaac discovered Colin’s secret, and that knowledge begins to affect the club on the field.

Colin’s arc has had a strong build up throughout the season and it all comes to a head in “La Locker Room Aux Folles.” You can feel the anxiety and pain through Billy Harris’s performance as well as a sense of hopelessness as he waits for any acknowledgement from his teammate. Any attempts to force the situation only leads to a colder shoulder and dirty looks. The pairing with Trent Crimm as a mentor provides some semblance of compassion and level headed advice for someone wrestling with a deep personal secret.

Ted Lasso also gives Kola Bokinni more to work with as Isaac. He is already an intimidating guy, but his anger makes him even scarier. Though I can understand the reasoning, the blow up towards a fan didn’t quite click and comes off as going a little over the edge for the sake of the story. What brings it all back is the final interactions between the pair.

For such a complicated issue, the writers really articulate well the different fears and emotions both were having. Isaac in particular was hurt that he was lied to and not trusted with such information rather than by who Colin really is. Having two friends shooting the breeze is an endearing way to showcase their close friendship and end the episode.

Over the course of three seasons, Ted Lasso has developed an extensive ensemble. So, it’s nice to dive deeper into other characters such as Colin and Isaac. However, because this might be the final season, you kind of want to spend more time with the titular character. The coach did have a nice moment showing his support for Colin through a personal anecdote. Though the significance and lesson is there, it is a little muddled with the comparison to gay people that even the show acknowledges.

Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent has his time in the spotlight as well. The assistant coach’s behavior early in the episode is to enforce how obnoxious he is becoming, but I can’t imagine speaking to my employer in that tone, let alone completely disobeying a request, and not being reprimanded. He does redeem himself being there for Isaac and trying to speak some sense into him based off of his own experiences. Also, though his story during the press conference captivates both the media and the audience, it does come off as a little preachy and holier than thou.

Nate’s journey continues to be very intriguing. He seems to be in a good place with his dream job and dream girl. The past few weeks of Ted Lasso, he’s become the amiable guy we first met as AFC Richmond’s kitman. It’s just whenever Rupert is around, he reverts back to his cocky version. His boss wants to project a certain image for himself and his employees and that’s coming into conflict with his manager.

We see Nate run off during their guys’ night as a form of fighting off the negative influence. However, there is some ambiguity when he meets back up with Jade. I’m not sure that it’s a loving embrace to show how much he appreciates her or one of regret knowing the difficulty of staying with her and keeping his job.

Speaking of Rupert, how great is Anthony Head has Ted Lasso’s villain. He can be so condescending, calculating, and chilling while greeting you with a smile on his face. Jade learns that the hard way. Rupert wouldn’t be so detestable without that performance.

Ted Lasso showcases other members of the team with the culmination of Colin’s season long arc complete with a heartwarming and candid ending with Isaac.

New episodes of Ted Lasso are released Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
