On Top Chef, there are only seven contestants left. That is less than half of the starting number of competitors. Those that remained even began thinking of what it would feel like to win it all. However, they can’t get too ahead of themselves because we’re still several weeks away from the finale.
Chef Tom Brown from the London Michelin star restaurant Cornerstone greeted the chefs with Padma. He would serve as guest judge in the quickfire where they had to create a dish using a selection of kippers and other smoked and salted seafood. The challenge to use these ingredients is balancing the saltiness already incorporated into the proteins to help preserve the food. Since we’re approaching the end game now, immunity was off the table.
Afterwards, Padma was still hungry so she took everyone out on a little field trip. They met up at the restaurant Flora Indica, a fine dining Indian restaurant. Chef Asma Khan cooked them a traditional thali meal. Though the contestants enjoyed the food, they also took meticulous notes anticipating that it would be tied to their elimination challenge.
They were tasked with creating their own thali. It had to individually incorporate the six flavor profiles – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent, and pungent – in the different dishes. The thali could be either traditional or their own spin as long as in had the different tastes.
