‘W0rldtr33’ #2 spreads its roots

Another titillating chapter in what’s sure to be a wild ride.

W0rldtr33 #2 is here with Tynion, Blanco, Bellaire, and Bidikar all back to continue their twisted journey into the undernet. This issue is split between multiple groups: Scrappy journalist Fausta and trademark Tynion spooky blonde (and Yolandi impersonator) Ph34r, FBI agents Siobhan and Nicky, the bewildered Ellison (still in the jail), and computer-stuff-knower Liam.

SPOILERS AHEAD for W0rldtr33 #2!

Fausta has left the jail where Ellison is still being held following his brother’s murder spree and subsequent death and has broken into his family home to gather information for her apparent investigative report and prestige podcast into Gibson’s murders. One could possibly make a positive case for her industriousness and drive to do a good job and helping Ell at least get some money from this life-ruining situation, but her callous, flippant approach to the situation and general disregard for the wishes of anyone involved doesn’t bode well for her character. This complexity is compelling and welcome.

Ph34r is in the house too, however, still very naked, and seems to want Fausta out of the picture. Ph34r’s constant nudity is starting to stand out. There’s a lot to be said about our relationship with our bodies in the modern age where we’re increasingly alienated from our increasingly digital labor and more of our lives and identity exist online, separate from our corporeal forms, but the text doesn’t give us much to work with this issue. She is just back there with the girls out, being sinister just out of Fausta’s view. Hopefully, this will go somewhere soon.

Liam was in the first issue but we still don’t know much about him other than he was involved in the undernet back in the day and has now been called upon by his wealthy friend Gabriel to help deal with its reappearance.

FBI agents Siobhan Silk and Nicky Gallo are new additions to the story. Nicky is a truly modern creation. He doesn’t judge people for their sexual orientation or their proclivities and he treats his female partner as an equal. He also, however, throws around the F-slur a lot. He seemingly should know better considering he has a close friend who is gay, but has chosen to keep that weapon in his arsenal and utilizes it often to perform his own brand of masculinity while complaining about what he perceives to be a poor customer service experience. Tynion does good work making the exchange amusing instead of just shocking with a word many may find triggering. It is absolutely serving a purpose and tells us a lot about Agent Gallo.

Once again, everyone on this book is working in tandem to elevate it to an incredibly high place. The glitch effects and chromatic aberration every time someone beholds the undernet are still very cool and the color temperature shifting with the different lighting situations of the various settings is skillful and gorgeous. The character designs are also quite good and thankfully so. This issue has a lot of characters, half of which are new but they are all instantly clockable as unique individuals.

With a cliffhanger ending and the introduction of more compelling interested parties, W0rldtr33 upholds the high bar set by the first issue and will hopefully be a highlight of the comics medium for many more months to come.
