Initially, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was meant to be released on April 8, 2022, but this date was later changed to October 7, 2022. But as we know that didn’t happen either. While the movie’s production started on June 9, 2020, the confirmed release date is set for June 2, 2023. Two weeks before DC’s The Flash is set to hit theaters. Animator Nick Kondo also shared that Part II, titled, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, would release on March 29, 2024. So multiverse fans have plenty to look forward to!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Plot:

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ended with Miles Morales and his new-found spider friends defeating Wilson Fisk and destroying his collider. Each Spidey returned to their universes, and Morales became a full-time friendly neighborhood superhero. But lucky for us, the end-credit scene saw Gwen find a way to contact Morales from her dimension.

According to the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse, Morales is on an epic adventure that will see him join forces with Gwen Stacy and other spider-people in a face-off with one of the most powerful villains they’ve ever dealt with. Even though they seem to differ with the team on how to handle the new dangerous villain, the Spot. With the confirmation of a second part of this sequel releasing in 2024, fans are sure to be left on a cliffhanger at the end of this movie.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord said they did not plan for the movie to be split into two. They wrote the story as it should be and surprisingly realized that it had to be two movies instead of one. Across the Spider-Verse is expected to explore six different universes while diving deep into Gwen and Miles’s relationship. During an interview with Collider, co-director Thompson shared that there would be approximately 280 spider-people in this movie. So it will be bigger in every way than the first movie. Maybe even see a love triangle because of Spider-Punk’s similar feelings to Gwen.

Many stars from the first movie will be reprising their roles in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, including Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, respectively. Although Oscar Isaac only made a brief appearance in the first movie as Spider-Man 2099, according to the trailer, he will be back in a major role for the sequel as Miguel O’Hara (the Spider-Man in charge). Other stars returning to their roles in this animation include Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’s Father, Jefferson Davis, Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’s mother, Rio, and Jake Johnson as Miles’s mentor Peter B Parker.

But some new voices are also joining this animated cast, like actress and producer Issa Rae. Rae plays Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman. Daniel Kaluuya from Black Panther will join the cast as Hobart ‘Hobie’ Brown, aka Spider-Punk. Jason Schwartzman will voice this movie’s villain, the Spot. The Spot may sound familiar because his body is covered with inter-dimensional portals, which sounds cool yet scary at the same time. Another Spider-Man joining the team is Deadpool’s Karan Soni voicing Pavitr Prabhakar, aka Spider-Man India, from an alternate universe.

For Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans, you’ll be happy to know that Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse announced on their official Twitter that Andy Samberg would be voicing Ben Reilly, aka Scarlet Spider. Amandla Stenberg will also join the cast and voice Spider-Byte.

In an interview, Nicolas Cage, who played Spider-Man Noir, revealed that Sony hadn’t reached out to him for the sequel, so he might not appear as fans expected. While there are rumors that Tom Holland could make a cameo in this sequel, nothing has been confirmed yet. But after the surprise fans got in No Way Home; we can’t discount the possibility just yet.

Who is Making Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?

Directors Bob Persichetti, Rodney Rothman, and Peter Ramsey from the first movie will not be returning to work on the sequel. Taking the helm are Justin K Thompson, Dos Santos, and Kemp Powers, who will make their directorial debut with Across the Spider-Verse. As mentioned above, Phil Lord, who co-wrote and produced the first movie, was joined by Christopher Miller and Dave Callaham (Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to write the script for this sequel.

This is the first animated movie with the largest crew of nearly 1000 people working on the film, 200 more than on the first. This award-winning animated film keeps on raising the bar and the visuals show how much work and love was poured into this project. Each scene looks like a painting.
