‘The Secret Kingdom’ review: Family friendly adventure has all the right pieces

A storybook adventure.

The Secret Kingdom is a family friendly adventure about a young boy who discovers he is a prophesied king. Peter (Sam Everingham) and his sister Verity (Alyla Browne) are joined by fantastic companions as they try to save the Kingdom. Along the way, they face challenges that will tear their wit and bravery.

The film has all the ingredients of a fun fantasy. There are the expected magical creatures, colorful locations, and tricky puzzles. But it is special effects will stand out for many. They are consistently excellent with the many creatures adding to the world. Each of the characters they meet along the journey has their own personality and younger audiences will have fun trying to pick a favorite.

There is some choppy editing during the quest. There are few awkward transitions that will cause some brief confusion. This happens often in the earlier part of the film. There are also some quick cuts that look out of place. None of it ruins The Secret Kingdom, but it is always noticeable.

The pacing will keep kids interested but never feels too fast. The plot moves from puzzle to puzzle, with being difficult enough to keep kiddos engaged but are never so hard they are frustrating. Everything culminates in a twist ending that provides deeper meaning to the entire adventure.

The Secret Kingdom is the type of adventure movie that there is not enough of nowadays. It has a storybook atmosphere that will appeal to kids and an exciting journey that will provide adults with a sense of nostalgia. The imaginative setting and characters ensure things never get stale and the finale provides the needed emotional impact.

The Secret Kingdom comes to theaters June 9
