‘Knight Terrors’ #1 review: The dead shall save them

Just how far will Deadman go to get help?

We’ve dived headfirst into DC’s Knight Terrors event, and it has been quite a widespread attack on heroes and villains. Even though this is issue one of the main event comic book, things kicked off with a one-two-punch in the form of DC’s Free Comic Book Day 2023 and Knight Terrors: First Blood. Don’t miss out on those pieces, as they will give you a broader scope of Insomnia’s attack. As for Knight Terrors #1, get ready for an edge-of-your-seat thriller starring Deadman as Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, and Caspar Wijngaard team up with Joshua Williamson to invade your dreams!

If you are a fan of Deadman, you will love this opener. The character intro page gives us more insights into Boston Brand’s acrobatics, motivations, and choices that lead him to become Deadman. The scene shifts to an empty circus with Deadman as the lone figure, but instead of his jumpsuit, he is wearing a suit. It gives him a different vibe, almost like a Twilight Zone narrator feel. Deadman then changes the mood and shifts the scene back to the action established in First Blood.

That scene shift helps to establish a strong connection with the greater event. What has been great about Knight Terrors so far is it’s connected, but not forcing you to get every tie-in comic. I don’t feel pressured to buy every tie-in issue, but if I want to experience more of this event, I have additional options to seek out. A fun element of this event is the exploration of dreams and memories, which we get to see here via Deadman exploring Insomnia.

That exploration has some great clues, so take your time looking at those pages. A callback to a previous DC Comics event is a fantastic tie-in and helps me, as a fan, believe in the connectivity of these stories with the Dawn of DC initiative. The initiative has been fantastic and makes my comic collection feel worthwhile again and gives all kinds of heroes a spotlight like Deadman is getting here. I like how the villain and hero exchange with each other, as Insomnia would have you believe he is a god, but Deadman is calling him out as “just some dude.”

The art team plays perfectly to this event and even keeps the tones and atmosphere that Howard Porter and Brad Anderson set up in First Blood. The colors by Frank Martin and Caspar Wijngaard present an ethereal feeling when you stay up late. The highlights complement it nicely, giving it a mysterious energy and extending the energy powers from Deadman and Insomnia as they fight. This creative team produces a hook that will keep you around as the search for the dream stone continues. The ending will have fans talking, and I can’t wait to see their reactions to the return of a classic DC character.

DC’s summer event, Knight Terrors, continues with a high-octane adventure that will have you worried for the heroes. Deadman gets some excellent moments as he squares up with Insomnia to search for the Dream Stone. This creative team will have you wide awake for their quest to save the day.
