‘Knight Terrors: Ravager’ #2 leans into monster action

It’s all about blood monsters in ‘Knight Terrors: Ravager’ #2.

Knight Terrors: Ravager #1 was one of my favorite tie-in issues yet, and with the second issue out today, I couldn’t wait to see more slasher goodness. In the second and final chapter, Ravager is being chased by two monster goons and a monster version of herself. They’re in a nightmarish suburban neighborhood, and her dad made of blood, wants to use her as a bridge into the real world.

While the first issue was a slasher and monster mash, this second issue is more of an action comic with the monsters pulling some impressive power. The issue opens with Ravager getting more innocent people killed, so she moves the battle to a location without bystanders.

If blood creeps you out, Dexter Soy and color artist Veronica Candini will disgust you thoroughly. In one scene, two innocent folks get combined into a spider, and the bloody sinew that combines them makes for a pretty unnerving image. The slasher movie horror vibe is reduced thanks to the spider and the two muscular monsters chasing Ravager, though. That includes a final showdown with the “boss” of the two-parter, which comes down to fast thinking by Ravager.

There isn’t much here regarding Ravager’s stakes in this fight. You can see writer Ed Brisson is exploring the father/daughter element, but since this monster she’s facing is simply a representation of him — and Ravager doesn’t fear him in the slightest — the stakes never feel all that high. Instead, this issue plays out like a fight scene. You know Ravager will win. It’s also unclear how this blood monster is going to use her to get to the real world. Without that explanation, I was left waiting for the book to end.

However, there’s some interesting crosscutting to the real world, and it’s a nice lead-in for a future story. It’s also nice to see the nightmare isn’t finished, and the events of this story will carry on, which you can’t say for most of the other tie-in issues.

I wanted more out of Knight Terrors: Ravager #2, especially after the slasher vibes of the first issue. It does have interesting ties to the real world and a future tale, but the stakes never feel all that high as you await the end.
