‘Spirit World’ #4 shows off Xanthe’s courage and commitment

An engaging continuation of the story.

Spirit World #4, written by Alyssa Wong, with art by Haining and colors by Sebastian Cheng, picks up right where we left our colorful cast of characters in issue #3: exploring an eerily quiet and abandoned apartment building in the Spirit World. The majority of the issue is an extended action sequence, fighting off a goopy amalgamation of spirits known as a Collective. The fast-paced action is beautifully rendered and shows off the skills of our three main protagonists.

SPOILERS AHEAD for Spirit World #4!

Xanthe faces the Collective armed only with a wooden club. They realize the Collective is made up of their friends and neighbors and try to find a way to save them without hurting them. They implore Constantine and Batgirl not to harm them, even as he’s being swallowed whole. The great sorcerer that he is though, Constantine is able to free himself. When Bowen provides Xanthe with some extra Joss paper, they’re able to make a new sword and perform exorcisms to attempt to save the spirits trapped in the Collective. Despite the toll it takes on them, Xanthe keeps fighting until they collapse from exhaustion. Xanthe’s commitment to helping others and risking their own wellbeing to save their neighbors is some great character development. It really shows their genuine care and commitment to the greater good.

The issue also hints at Po Po’s past. Shen refers to her as the Verdant Sorceress, suggesting she was once more powerful than she appears. When Xanthe suggests seeking help from the Jade Court, Po Po strongly opposes the idea. This Court supposedly rules the Spirit World, and Po Po’s reaction implies a possible connection to it. This adds an intriguing layer to Po Po’s character and leaves room for further exploration in future issues.

The artwork in this issue maintains the high standard set by previous ones. The layout is dynamic, with panels flowing together to create a cohesive visual experience. There are both single and double-page spreads that allow Haining and Cheng to really flex their creative muscles. One standout moment is Shen transforming into a giant fox and consuming spirits. The magical elements are smokey and ethereal and the colors bring the Spirit World to life. The sound effects, like the Collective’s “blorps” and “slorps,” add to the visual appeal.

Spirit World #4 delivers an engaging continuation of the story. Alyssa Wong’s writing pairs well with Haining’s art and Cheng’s colors. The characters’ determination and the hints about Po Po’s past are the highlights of the issue, offering emotional depth and intrigue. The issue’s artwork maintains its impressive quality, with dynamic layouts and captivating visuals that enhance the storytelling. As the mysteries of the Spirit World unfold, readers are left eagerly anticipating what’s to come.
