A huge swath of mutants is trying to survive after being sent through a Krakoan gate and finding themselves in a barren desert. That’s just one story taking place in Immortal X-Men #15, out this week. With the hope that some, if not most, survived, this issue gives readers hope that there may be a new tomorrow while we continue to witness Xavier’s funk possibly lifted after completely failing after the Hellfire Gala.
Before we get to those narratives, Immortal X-Men #15 opens with Selene killing several Orchis soldiers. Writer Kieron Gillen does well to show she truly loves killing people, and how she does it is quite unique. Soon, Shaw enters the scene, and he continues showing his focus is on profits and bettering himself. Combined, these two are a great duo of different kinds of evil. Still, they’re taking out the enemy in the process, and with mutant law moot, killing humans is certainly not off the table.
Most of this issue concerns Exodus and Hope leading a large band of survivors through the desert. The biblical implications of what they are doing are not lost on Exodus, although Hope certainly doesn’t buy into it. In these scenes, Gillen cleverly suggests ways this too large of a group can survive on so little food and water. There’s a data page detailing how they survive, finding shelter or clothe themselves in the hot sun. They weren’t killed when sent through a gate, but given their inhospitable place, they were certainly sent to die.
They aren’t alone in the desert either, which supplies the issue with a bit of action. A roving band of Wolverines seems to be patrolling and hunting. They’re mindless and ready to kill, hence the cover. It’s not explained why they’re there, but maybe they’re leftovers from Beast’s army? Either way, it loops in another mutant who will likely be a major player in the next issue.
Something this issue lifts up is the potential for Xavier. So far, during the Krakoan era, he’s been all smiles or thinking to himself, and that continued in this latest story arc. That’s not so anymore after this issue, though, as we see, he may have gotten out of his funk. It’s still too early to gather where his mind is, but what he does to an Orchis kill team is a sight. Could he break bad and go the route of Magneto?
Another villain pops up, which will get people’s pulses up. If you saw the cover of the next issue, you know who I mean, and dammit, does Paco Medina draw the hell out of him. It’s a poster-worthy full-page splash that ends the book. Given the state of Exodus and Hope’s large group of mutants, they’re probably no match, but we know at least they are survivors.
Immortal X-Men #15 is an intriguing chapter in the Fall of X era. It supplies adequate villainy, proposes a new direction for Xavier, and establishes a large group of mutants that may have hope for the future of all mutants. Now, let’s hope they can survive the experience.
