‘Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny’ #1 delivers a good ‘Year One’ origin

New ‘Masters of the Universe’ series gives a solid Year One origin for He-Man.

Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny #1 landed on my list for a major reason: its connection to Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Though I couldn’t call myself a fan of the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, the pedigree behind said series was a major draw. Kevin Smith and Powerhouse Animation? Sold! And what a combination it was, as Revelation delivered a series for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Forge of Destiny is attempting to tell a story set pre-Revelation – specifically, in the days when Prince Adam first became He-Man. His father, Randor, in an attempt to foster peace among Eternia, is currently traveling to the nation of Anwat Gar. There, the Forge of Destiny – a wellspring where any weapon from your imagination can be forged – is located, and it’s where the sinister Skeletor plans his latest scheme for conquering Eternia.

Tim Seeley’s script walks a tricky balance: It not only has to appeal to fans who’ve watched Revelation but also people who’ve never seen an episode of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in their life. It works in the former sense; anyone who’s watched Revelation will feel a pang in their heart as Adam struggles with the weight of telling Teela that he’s He-Man or audibly gulp as Skeletor berates Evil-Lyn. But other readers might struggle to find an entry point or be pressed to care. To his credit, Seeley does draw parallels between Adam and the prince of Anwat Gar, who feels cast aside by his mother – the best conflict comes from discovering just how much your protagonist the best advice I have would be to watch Revelation, then come back and read Forge of Destiny.

Other than that, the artwork from Eddie Nunez and Brad Simpson is extremely close to Revelation‘s art style. A two-page spread from Nunez is a direct homage to the series opening credits, featuring He-Man and his allies locked in battle with Skeletor’s minions. Skeletor himself marks a terrifying figure: Nunez draws lines and cracks running through his bleach bone face, and even manages to give a character who has a literal skull for a head plenty of expression. Simpson’s colors make Eternia look like the weird, wild place that it is; the kingdom of Eternos is depicted in warm light, giving it the appearance that it’s literally shining, while Skeletor’s home base of Snake Mountain is cast in darkness & glowing green light. Even the lettering from Andworld Design gives each character their distinct voice – once again, Skeletor is the standout with his craggy, downright creepy word balloons.

Masters of the Universe: Forge of Destiny #1 gives a solid Year One origin for He-Man, though only hardcore Masters of the Universe fans will probably check it out. I’ll say this much: It definitely pumps up my anticipation for Masters of the Universe: Revolution.
