#5: The Cull #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 13, 2023

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

The Cull #2 is a great second issue, opening up the fantastical world while further developing the characters. This series is quickly becoming my favorite fantasy series of 2023. The Cull is richly imaginative and deeply human.

#4: Coda #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 13, 2023

Coda #1 is already focusing in on all the things that made the original run of Coda so beloved: the fascinating world-building, the realistic and lovingly tense relationship between Hum and Serka, Matías Bergara’s gorgeous character design, and the shockingly grounded emotions that underscore the story. An unendingly delicious treat for the eyes, Bergara’s art draws the reader in immediately, and Si Spurrier’s decision to give Hum and Serka an unborn child was the perfect way to give the two heroes the hope, motivation, and tension they need to add meaning to the ridiculous world they find themselves in. Anyone who loved the first Coda series will undoubtedly enjoy this first issue to no end, and anyone who didn’t read the first series will be inspired to go back in read it after sampling just one page.

#3: Sonic the Hedgehog’s 900th Adventure

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 13, 2023

I thought this was a great little comic. I only wish it embraced its own potential a little more and delivered something genuinely knock-out amazing like the 3oth Anniversary did a couple years ago. The return of Sonic UK alumni puts a smile on my face like no other, and was the genuine highlight of the book for me. I hope everybody who worked on this story feels proud of this collaboration, as they should, since it really did show that everybody who works on Sonic comics is a talent in their own, unique and cool way. And that’s exactly what the little blue rodent would want.

#2: Children of the Vault #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 13, 2023

Children of the Vault #2 is a riveting look at a culture that has been molded and augmented by time and power. Camp details their points of view, and it’s not looking good for humanity. Children of the Vault is ambitious, exciting, and edge-of-your-seat comics.

#1: World’s Finest: Teen Titans #3

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of September 13, 2023

World’s Finest: Teen Titans #3 is another strong entry in the series. The series has carried the purpose of the Teen Titans by having the story discuss heavy topics, such as roles, identity, and the risks of being infatuated and obsessed with others. Throughout this issue, several seeds are planted for the upcoming threats on the horizon. Altogether, this makes for another great issue in the series.
